Everything you need to know about using TRICARE and VA Community Care for mental health therapy — coverage details, the referral process, copays, and how to find a certified therapist near your base.
TRICARE's mental health benefits are among the most comprehensive of any insurance plan
Issues that military-specialized therapists are trained to address
Evidence-based treatment for combat-related PTSD including EMDR, CPT (Cognitive Processing Therapy), and Prolonged Exposure therapy.
Free MST-related care available at all VA facilities — no copay, no disability rating required. Specialized MST coordinators at every VA medical center.
Adjustment challenges after deployment or PCS, relationship strain, identity shifts, and civilian reintegration support.
Distinct from PTSD — moral injury involves harm done to one's moral framework. Emerging evidence base for targeted therapies.
Couples therapy, parenting stress, secondary traumatization, and support for military children through deployment and separation.
Co-occurring TBI and mental health conditions are common in combat veterans. Integrated TBI/mental health care is available at VA Polytrauma Centers.
How veterans access mental health therapy through the VA Community Care Network
Apply at va.gov/health-care/apply or call 1-877-222-8387. Most veterans who served on active duty are eligible. Enrollment is required before using most VA services.
Schedule a primary care appointment at your nearest VA medical center or CBOC (Community Based Outpatient Clinic). This establishes your medical record and gives you a VA PCM.
Ask your VA PCM or VA mental health team for a Community Care referral for mental health counseling. You can also self-refer by calling the Community Care Network at 1-866-606-8198.
The VA will review your request and authorize Community Care if you meet eligibility criteria: wait time exceeds 14 days for mental health, distance to VA is more than 30 miles, or it is in your best medical interest.
Once authorized, you select a VA-approved community mental health provider. Use EmoraPath's "VA Community Care" filter to find approved therapists, or search the VA Community Care Provider Directory at va.gov/find-locations.
Contact the therapist directly to schedule. They will verify your VA Community Care authorization. The VA pays the therapist directly — your copay (if any) depends on your VA disability rating and priority group.
MST Exception: No Referral Required
Veterans who experienced Military Sexual Trauma (MST) can receive free mental health care at any VA facility without a referral, regardless of service connection, discharge status, or VA enrollment status. Contact the MST Coordinator at your nearest VA medical center to get started.
