Common questions about TRICARE coverage, VA Community Care, and military mental health benefits.
Yes. TRICARE covers outpatient mental health services including individual therapy, group therapy, and family counseling. Active-duty service members and their families are covered under TRICARE Prime, TRICARE Select, and other plan types. Most outpatient mental health visits require no referral under Prime for the first 8 visits per year.
VA Community Care allows eligible veterans to receive care from approved community providers when VA services are unavailable or inconvenient. To get a referral, contact your VA primary care provider or call 1-866-606-8198 (VA Community Care). Once approved, you can see any VA-approved community therapist — including all therapists listed on this page who hold VA Community Care credentials.
National Guard and Reserve members are eligible for TRICARE when activated on federal orders for more than 30 days. When not activated, TRICARE Reserve Select (TRS) is available as a premium-based plan covering mental health services. Contact your unit's medical readiness office for eligibility confirmation.
Yes — all therapists listed on this page accept TRICARE or VA Community Care, and many specialize in military-related trauma, PTSD, MST (Military Sexual Trauma), and deployment-related stress. Look for providers listing Trauma & PTSD or EMDR as specialties. Many are veterans themselves or military spouses with lived experience.
TRICARE Prime members can self-refer for up to 8 outpatient mental health visits per year without a PCM referral at network providers. After 8 visits, a referral from your PCM is required. TRICARE Select members can see any TRICARE-authorized therapist without a referral for the full year, subject to cost-sharing. Active-duty service members typically pay no cost-share for covered mental health services.
Voluntarily seeking mental health treatment is generally viewed positively by security clearance adjudicators and does not automatically result in clearance revocation. The National Security Adjudicative Guidelines explicitly state that seeking mental health care is a positive factor. Records at private civilian therapists are protected by HIPAA and not automatically shared with your command. Consult your security officer or JAG if you have specific concerns.
